He was the eldest of six children born to Forest and Verona (Sjodin) Norell and is survived by sisters and brothers Minerva, Vernon, Marie, Carol and Rodney; one son Matthew (Alejandra) of Anoka and granddaughter Hanna of Denver; and several nieces and nephews.
Darrell grew up on the family homestead on Windy Lake in Smoky Hollow township. He rode the school bus to Hill City for grade school and to Remer for high school, graduating with the class of 1950.
After four years in the Air Force, he attended the University of Minnesota followed by employment in California with Honeywell for several years, then moving to Montana where he ran his own business and built a home, enjoying time for hunting and fishing. He eventually returned to Minnesota and for the past several years has lived at the Quadna Mountain area near Hill City, presiding over many fish fries at Windy Lake.
In retirement and throughout his life Darrell used his many skills and talents to do things for people. He was always available to help with repairs, donating his time preparing taxes, providing transportation to those in need for appointments and delivering fresh cleaned fish to friends, neighbors, and family. He devoted much of his time maintaining and being a caretaker for the family farm property at Windy Lake. Darrell was a man of many talents and had a unique sense of humor.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 24th, 2016 beginning at 12:00 p.m. until the 1:00 p.m. Memorial Service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hill City, MN, followed by a time of visiting, lunch and coffee. Burial will take place in the spring at the Smoky Hollow Cemetery.
