BACKUS-Cass County Board approved Tuesday the county's share of a street project in the city of Walker.

County Engineer David Enblom said the bids Walker received came in about 10 percent under engineering estimates. The county plans to resurface the street and install new sidewalks along portions of the project that qualify for municipal state aid funding. The city will rebuild storm sewers and repave several adjacent streets that are city streets, but do not qualify for state aid.

The county's approval is contingent upon the city also approving the paving contract.

Cass commissioners voted to recognize individuals and groups who volunteer to clean ditches along county roads in the Adopt-a-Highway program. The county started the program in 1991.

There now are 133 groups and individuals who clean litter from 331 miles of county roads in the county three times each year.

The board approved a survey of the proposed County State Aid Highway 37, a road which will replace the road inside Ah-Gwah-Ching property the county bought from the state a few years ago.

Designating and recording the location of the replacement road is preliminary to obtaining easements and/or trading or purchasing land from the city and neighboring Hawkinson Construction private property for a road right-of way.

The county has not set a proposed year for building the road, because the county has not set a timetable to develop the land for future county uses.

The commissioners voted to rescind the vacation of a portion of old CSAH 71 along the west shore of Ten Mile Lake when they learned the vacation denied a private property owner access from a public road to portions of his property.

Another neighbor spoke in objection to the vacation.
