Commissioners will tour Cloquet mill to see results of county timber sales
Sappi representatives told County Land Commissioner Joshua Stevenson the press would not be allowed to join the board on the tour, because Sappi's operation includes proprietary methods for processing cellulous.
The county board Tuesday appointed Commissioners Jeff Peterson and Bob Kangas to review proposed routes Enbridge is considering for a new pipeline route through the central part of the county.
One possible route follows an existing Allete (Minnesota Power) electric line route near Pine River. It is expected the line would cross county administered land as well as privately owned land.
Enbridge plans a series of open houses to inform the public about its proposed route alternatives. Enbridge also will send letters to property owners concerning the use of existing utility easements or possible new easements needed.
Administrator Robert Yochum noted Enbridge will pay annual easement fees to both public and private landholders over whose land the new line crosses. He said Peterson and Kangas will review the proposed routes and recommend a route the board could vote to approve as a recommendation to Enbridge.
Woodtick Wheelers All-Terrain Vehicle Club northeast of Hackensack obtained board approval Tuesday to submit a plan to Minnesota DNR for a grant-in-aid trail running from Hackensack to Longville
Greg Anderson offered the lower of two quotes for five to seven loads of Class 5 gravel at $11 per yard to improve Blackberry Trail and a forest access trail in Deep Portage.
County Engineer David Enblom reported to the board that Leech Lake Tribal Council has approved paying a higher than initially planned amount to reconstruct County Road 143 and build a trail along County State Aid Highway 75.
The county received bids earlier this month that ran higher than engineering estimates for this joint project. The county board approved Aug. 6 paying its higher share of costs. Now, the county and tribe will each pay $1,681,812.50 toward the project, covering the increased cost.
The board rejected both bids presented Tuesday to install a tunnel under Highway 371 at Walker and connect the city park with Walker-Hackensack-Akeley School.
The only two bids received, from Gladen Construction and Tri-City Paving, ran seven and 21 percent over engineering estimates.
If the bids had been accepted, work would have to be completed this fall. Enblom told the board he believes most contractors already have enough work to carry them until winter. If the county waits to bid for work for 2014, he said he believes bids will run lower.
In addition to the county, this project will be paid by the school, U.S. Forest Service and city.
