Civil Air Patrol to hold Pancake Breakfast Aug. 11
To the Editor,
The CAP has a rich history. It was formed in 1941 to patrol the coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico looking for enemy submarines. When spotted, the submarines were either sunk or chased away. This saved countless lives during World War II. When the United States Air Force was formed, CAP became the auxiliary branch of that service, an all-volunteer force.
Today, the members of the CAP conduct ground and air searches to find lost planes and/or persons. Each year, they save about 75 lives. They have also received commendations for their work following 9/11, and many natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, wildfires, tornadoes and flooding.
The squadron at Walker had an interesting beginning. It started out as the Walker Flying Club. They formed the local CAP squadron and donated their airplane for use. For years it was known as the Cass County Squadron but there are also members from Beltrami and Hubbard Counties. So the name was changed to the Tri-County Senior Squadron.
Civil Air Patrol works closely with other public safety organizations. To recognize this spirit of cooperation, we have asked members of the Cass County Sheriff's Department and their dive team, the North Memorial Ambulance and Helicopter crews, members of the Walker Fire Department and the Walker Police Department and the U.S. Forest Service as well as the Air Ambulance from the Sanford Clinic to participate at the breakfast by bringing pieces of their equipment for you to see "up close and personal" and to answer your questions.
The breakfast will be at the Walker Airport, Sunday, August 11th, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Our secret recipe for made-from-scratch buttermilk pancakes was created by two members of the squadron, Hazel Cleghorn and Donna Withrow. We offer all the pancakes and sausage you can eat plus a beverage. There is no charge but a free will donation will be gratefully accepted. Proceeds from the breakfast help the squadron defray expenses for training and overhead. While the Air Force does provide the aircraft, most other expenses are paid for by the members and fund raisers.
So! We hope you will join us, meet some of our local public safety officers, see the inside of an air ambulance (not as a patient) and have a great breakfast!
