Cass to auction excess county property
Items offered will range from office equipment to vehicles.
Tuesday, the county board approved hiring the lower of two bidders, Action Contracting of Walker, to replace a sidewalk and a retaining wall at the courthouse for $18,740.
Tim Richardson, central services director, obtained board approval to spend up to $5,000 to repair the wooden logo sign and supporting posts on the courthouse lawn.
Cass will receive $91,700 from state bridge bonding funds to replace a bridge on County State Aid Highway 1 that is about 10 miles south of Pine River.
The sheriff's department reported 33 men participated in the sentence to serve program the second quarter of this year, with 24 successfully completing the program.
They worked off $5,618 in fines and 94 jail days and completed an estimated $18,700 worth of work for the county, DNR, cities and nonprofits. They worked a total of 2,408 hours between April 1 and June 30.
Cass's health, human and veterans services expended 43.41 percent of the budget or $5,728,808 during the first half of 2014. Only 40 percent of the out of home child placement cost or $1,668,010 was spent the first half of 2014.
The commissioners referred to the budget committee a request from Dan Larson for the county to re-join after several years the Minnesota Rural Counties Caucus, a lobbying group for rural counties. Annual membership is about $2,000.
Larson told the board the caucus has been successful in recent years in obtaining a fairer portion of funding for outstate trails and roads. Previously a higher percentage went to predominantly metro counties.
The board approved amending personnel policy rules Tuesday to make the policy more compliant with recent state and federal changes. Auditor-Treasurer Sharon Anderson said the county's personnel committee will begin a more extensive review of the policy before presenting a completely re-written version for board approval in 2015.
The county board met in closed session at the end of Tuesday's meeting with William J. Everett, a Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust attorney who represents the county in a lawsuit a citizen filed against the county concerning law enforcement.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court. The county board made no statement and took no action following the closed session.
