Cass Highway Department: recent heavy rain washed out 14 county roads
Most could be repaired by hauling gravel to replace as much as six inches of gravel that washed off some roads in southern Cass County, he said. Only County Road 107 remained closed at one washout by Memorial Day, he said.
Southern Cass received between eight and 12 inches of rain in a three-day period, with some areas hit by eight inches in a four-hour period, Lyytinen reported.
County Engineer David Enblom said the volume of water rushing through streams and rivers in the area was well over double the amount in a 100-year flood and approached the amount for a 500-year event.
In the most significant washout on County Road 107, there were two seven-foot culverts at the site, which were insufficient to carry the water. Enblom said a third seven-foot culvert will be added before that road is rebuilt there. He estimated it will take 1,000 yards to gravel to fill that washout.
Lyytinen estimated the total road repair cost will be close to $100,000. Enblom said he plans to investigate whether any repairs might qualify for partial reimbursement from any state flood funds.
The damage included water over County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 30 at two locations, County Road 103 at six locations and County Road 106 at five locations causing gravel loss and a sink hole at one culvert on each.
Water over roads causing gravel loss occurred on CSAH 12 (six sites), CSAH 58 (six sites) and CSAH 35 (two) sites and on County Road 102.[[In-content Ad]]
Water and utility line problems caused a driveway culvert to wash out on CSAH 33. Bridge abutments were damaged when floods washed over a bridge on County Road 103. A culvert and pavement were damaged on CSAH 24.
Water over CSAH 17 caused washing by a culvert and a shoulder sinkhole. Washing on CSAH 29 caused significant washing and some pavement damage at two culvert locations. Significant shoulder loss occurred when water washed over one-fourth mile of CSAH 1.
Enblom obtained county board approval Tuesday to purchase a city lot in Pillager from Deerwood Bank for a storm sewer easement. The city of Pillager sent a letter of support for the purchase and indicated an interest in seeing a park there in the future and fishing pier on the Crow Wing River from that lot. The site is adjacent to a trail system..
