Cass Highway Department announces summer and future road maintenance projects
The board approved hiring Traffic Marking Service to paint lane stripes on 185 miles of 39 roads in the county. Cass stripes on a one-, two- or five-year cycle, depending upon how heavily traveled a road is.
Highway employees soon will begin crack filling with a tar-based mixture on older paved county highways where cracks have developed and will cut a line across newer pavement and lay a rubberized crack sealer in that to relieve stress on pavement as a measure to lessen future cracking.
Roads to be crack sealed this summer include County State Aid Highways (CSAH) 3, 8, 11, 42 and County Road 155.
Cass adds to the gravel surface every five years on roads carrying 100 or more vehicles per day. This year, gravel will be added to CSAH 25, 27, 41 and 47 and County Roads 106, 116, 117 and 135.
Swenson Aggregate and Construction of Pine River was the lowest of four bidders to win the graveling contract Tuesday with a $273,130.70 bid. Swenson also had the lowest of six bids to win a contract to do repairs to Bullmoose Impoundment and Snowsnake snowmobile trail.
The county contracts to apply chloride to 172 miles of 54 roads carrying 100 or more vehicles per day. This is the third year of a three-year contract. Cost per mile runs $1,900.
County highway employees this summer will improve ditches and apply some new gravel on portions of CSAH 30 and 35 near Pillager, County Roads 110 and 111 near Pine River, CSAH 41 and 48 and County Road 157 near Hackensack and Longville, CASH 52 and County Road 161 near Remer and County Roads 143 and 144 near Cass Lake.
Cass plans this year to pave or resurface CSAH 4, 65 and 143 and to replace the bridge over Boy River on CSAH 8 and the bridge over Mosquito Creek on County Road 103.
The current five-year plan calls for next year to rebuild and repave six miles of CSAH 1 from CSAH 24 to County Road 114 and replace three bridges/culverts in that road section. Also in 2014, the county plans to mill and resurface CSAH 202 in Pine River and CSAH 49 from Highway 84 to CSAH 56.
For 2015, the county plans to resurface CSAH 4 to CSAH 53 and CSAH 53 to CSAH 65, CSAH 65 from CSAH 4 to County Road 156, CSAH 58 from Highway 6 going four miles east and CSAH 74 from CSAH 65 to CSAH 3.
For 1016, the county plans to finish resurfacing CSAH 1 with the section from 107 to CSAH 19, to resurface CSAH 29 to CSAH 24, CSAH 17 from CSAH 1 to the county line, CSAH 20 from the county line to Highway 64, CSAH 29 from CSAH 78 to the county line and CSAH 205 in the city of Walker.
For 2017, the county plans to reconstruct CSAH 77 in the city of Lake Shore and to mill and overlay CSAH 75 from Highway 2 to the north county line.
In response to a request from the city of Lake Shore, County Engineer David Enblom said Tuesday he will look at rebuilding CSAH 77 on three miles of that road through the city in a way that incorporates a planned recreational trail through the city.
He said he expects to use a municipal curb and gutter design through that area, because of the high density development there.
Commissioner Neal Gaalswyk suggested it will be good to begin planning that improvement now to give time to receive input from neighbors along the trail and road improvement areas.
