Cass Health, Human and Veterans Service to set up office space in land department building
Environmental Services used the area formerly when building permit activity was higher, he said. A part-time Mississippi Headwaters Board employee who currently has an office there would move either to Cass's government offices at Pine River or to another member county.
Wells said he plans to have a staff person from each of his divisions have a permanent office there to better serve southern Cass. This would include a veterans services benefit specialist, a county social worker, child protection specialist, public health nurse and financial worker.
A veterans services representative will continue to offer satellite office services part-time on the existing schedule at Pine River and Pillager, he said. He hopes to have the Backus office opened by early July.
This will enable anyone who wants to inquire about or apply for benefits or services to do so any weekday in Backus as well as at Walker, Wells explained. Renovation cost will run under $10,000, Wells said, and can be paid from HHVS fund balance.
Because only about 10 to 15 people a month have been using a National Association of Counties card the county offered residents under age 65 for prescription drug discounts, the board voted Tuesday to switch to a different discount program offered through Thrifty White Pharmacy.
Not only will the prescription discounts improve, but the new program also offers uninsured or underinsured persons discounts on eye exams, for hearing products and services, for Lasik procedures and for dental services.
To apply for a card or obtain more information, contact Health, Human and Veterans Services at (218) 547-1340. The program is cost-free to the county.
HHVS expenditures through the first third of 2011 ran about 3 percent under budget projections, Wells reported. Cost to place children in foster care, group homes, correctional facilities and for emergency shelter ran about 7 percent below budget in the same time period, despite the fact that budget was lowered about $100,000 from the year before.
