Cass County garage replacement plan approved

BACKUS - Assistant County Engineer Kris Lyytinen obtained Cass County Board approval Tuesday to begin implementing his revised program to replace satellite county highway garages.

Since the county's newest garages at Hackensack and Pillager likely will not be replaced for about 15 years, only office space at those garages and more storage at Pillager will be added now. Floor repairs will be done to both existing garages.

The Cass Lake garage will be the first to be replaced this summer at an estimated cost of about $339,915. Roof repairs also will be done on the existing building, because that will continue as a cold storage facility once the new heated building is finished.

Roof repairs also will be done this year on the existing Pine River garage, because it too will provide cold storage when a new garage is built there.

Assuming money is available in future years, Lyytinen would like to replace the garage at Pine River in 2016, the Remer garage in 2017 and the Longville garage in 2019. All will be subject to board consideration in those years.

Cass Lake garage sits on land inside Cass Lake city limits, so it is connected to city water and sewer. All new garages will need to be connected to a municipal system, Lyytinen said.

At other cities besides Cass Lake, this could involve either running water and sewer from the cities to the current county sites or building the new garages on different sites inside those cities, he explained.

At Pine River, he is looking at a site adjacent to the county's building where the post office is located.

When that garage is built, the county will ask whether the city is interested in joining the county in that project, he said.

Lyytinen reported the highway department is evaluating a list of gravel roads where the county currently applies chloride treatment to consider whether some should be paved in the future.

The commissioners selected low bidder Swenson Aggregate and Construction of Pine River from among three bidders to provide a road gravel pile for $282,444.

They also selected low bidder Traffic Marking Services from two bids to provide land striping on paved county roads for $118,104. The per-foot price is down slightly from last year, Lyytinen said.
