Cass Commissioners eliminate Leech Lake representative from children's initiative board

REMER-Cass County commissioners voted Tuesday, Sept. 18, to drop reference to Leech Lake Reservation in the title of the county's children's initiative bylaws.

Leech Lake initially worked with the county to establish a children's initiative to offer support to children in families throughout the county and on the reservation. The bylaws were first written in 1994.

It has been quite a few years since the reservation named a representative to the initiative board or actively participated.

For this reason, Cass commissioners voted to rename the initiative Cass County Children's Initiative and to eliminate a Leech Lake representative from the board.

The board now will consist of two county board appointees from health, human and veterans services or probation; one representative each from the school districts of Cass Lake-Bena, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, Northland (Remer-Longville), Pine River-Backus and Pillager; one representative each from Northland (Remer-Longville), Pine River-Backus and Pillager family centers; and one from Bi-County Community Action Program.

The children's initiative board oversees operation of the county's three family centers, which originally were established with the help of a Pew Foundation grant.
