WALKER - Public Health Nurse Marlee Morrison reported Tuesday to Cass County commissioners that the county's 12 nurses administered 3,131 of the 6,740 H1N1 flu vaccine doses the county received last fall and winter.

In addition to the doses the county provided, private clinics in Cass administered another 2,531 to residents. Some of the remaining doses expired, she said, but many doses have a 2011 expiration date and still can be used.

This fall, the seasonal flu vaccine will have H1N1 as one component, Morrison said.

Health, Human and Veterans Services Director Ane Rogers reported the county spent 34.57 percent of the 2011 HHVS budget through the end of May or 41.67 percent of the year. Part of the savings came from the fact out of home child placement costs, largely a county-funded expense, ran 29 percent of budget in the same time period.

The county board approved an agreement, effective through Dec. 31, 2010, with American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union, which will enable supervisors within HHVS to approve alternate work schedules for some employees without union agreement to each individual request.

This agreement will allow the supervisor to consider permitting an employee to work a special schedule while pursuing advanced education or consider allowing an employee to work from a remote location, Rogers said.

Only two people appeared in support at the first of two public hearings on Cass County's proposed social host ordinance Tuesday. A second hearing will be held July 20 at 6 p.m. at Thunder Lake Town Hall.

The county board proposes an ordinance that would make anyone hosting a gathering where alcohol is served to minors guilty of a misdemeanor violation of the law, irrespective of whether the host provided the alcohol.

Sheriff Randy Fisher obtained board approval for a revised jail food service contract with A'viands at 2 percent more than last year. The base rate is $183.86 per day for 0 to 24 meals, $210.12 per day for 25 to 49 meals and $236.39 per day for over 49, plus $1.10 per meal.

A federal boating safety grant will cover Cass County's cost to purchase a shallow water drive outboard motor for use on an existing aluminum boat and 15 navigational buoys and two buoy lights.[[In-content Ad]]
