Cass awaits road transfer approval from Wilson Township

PINE RIVER - Cass County commissioners told Wilson Township supervisors at a board public hearing Tuesday at Wilson Town Hall they expect to adopt a resolution in June 15 turning over a .3-mile section of road to Wilson.
Tuesday's hearing was continued to next month, so Wilson supervisors can approve the transfer at their June meeting and so County Engineer David Enblom can amend a proposed county board resolution to include the county's commitment to repave the road.
The short road section once was part of Highway 371 just south of Pine River. It runs north-south at the south end of County State Aid Highway 44 and currently serves as the first .3 of a mile of Rocking Ranch Road Southeast.
County Engineer David Enblom said Tuesday the county will do some re-shouldering and repairs on the road this year. If approved for transfer in June, the county will continue to maintain it for two years before it becomes a town road.
Wilson officials will have an option to have the county resurface the pavement this year with a overlay on the existing pavement or can wait five to 10 years and accept a county commitment to mill the top layer of pavement, then resurface it when CSAH 44 is milled and repaved.[[In-content Ad]]Wilson supervisors indicated Tuesday they favor waiting and accepting the milling before the overlay.
The county board Tuesday approved having the county act as fiscal agent for Pine River Area Sanitary District to issue a $103,600 general obligation bond to make plant improvements and repair four pumps for the district water system.
Should the district default on repaying the bond, the county would assess the balance owed against property owners within that Pine River district.
The board accepted and referred to the sewer district board the appointment of Robert Hobson to replace Michael J. Mills as Chickamaw Beach representative to the district board.
In other township-related business Tuesday, the county board voted to authorize Enblom to use the $73,000 the county has in a township bridge fund to assist Sylvan Township with replacing culverts on Bigwater Drive.
Enblom said state township bridge money other counties have not used will pay the difference toward the estimated total $75,000 to $100,000 total cost. Sylvan will pay up to $10,000 engineering and related costs, Enblom said.
