Carol Ann Robinette Felix
b. 1951 d. Dec. 23, 2013
"Mom loved the outdoors," remembers her son, Rob. "As children, she was always packing us up in whatever camper we had at the time... the most memorable being an old van that had this ugly, blue shag carpet up the walls and ceiling. And before the van was ever in park, it seemed Mom would already have a fishing line cast in the lake. It wouldn't be long before we'd hear her holler, 'Get the net!' That was one woman that sure loved to fish."
Carol's daughter, Suzanne, recalls another frequent replay of those camping trips... the bug spray! "We'd have to take cover under the sheets to survive her fogging away the mosquitoes with limitless cans of repellent." (cough, cough... fresh air, please!)
Many of their outdoor exploits took place on the lake at their home in Remer where her husband, Jim, often heard Carol say, "This is heaven." He would then add, 'Well, it's not heaven, but it's a suburb of heaven. We still have one step to go before we get to the real thing." Dune buggies, scooters, 4-wheelers, jet skis... you name it. The desire for wind in her hair never tired. Fortunately, her career as a beautician ensured she always kept up a proper lady-like appearance, with one exception Rob delightfully pointed out. "Dad plowed a figure-8 track for me and my friends at one time, so naturally, I challenged Mom to a race. It was winter so the track was icy, but she had a need for speed... which landed her in a snowbank, wallowing around in a puffy snowsuit like a walrus. I couldn't stop laughing as she shouted, 'I can't get up!' If you've ever seen the movie A Christmas Story when the youngest boy is bundled head to toe, you know what I mean."
Camping continued to be a favorite pastime of Carol's. As the children grew into adulthood, she and Jim, were able to grow up themselves and explore life on the open road. They travelled south to Gulf Shores, Ala., one of their favorite beach destinations. There they created new friendships during Alabama's snowbird season, fell in love with the southern hospitality and became part of a motor coach community that always adores its winter family. At the Bella Terra RV Resort, Carol was often seen with her fellow RVers enjoying parties, dinners, crafts, and of course, an occasional casino trip with girlfriends. Here Jim would hear Carol say her familiar line, "This is heaven." But Jim would again add, "Well, it's not heaven, but it's another suburb of heaven. We still have one step to go before we get to the real thing." Now, she's getting to experience it first-hand.
Carol is survived by her soul mate, husband and best friend, Jim Felix, and forever treasured by her children: Suzanne (husband John); Rob (wife Brandy); grandchildren (Dino, Mimi, A.J. and Nate) along with friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten. She is predeceased by her parents, sister (Mary) and brother (Rob.)
Services were held on January 25, 2014 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, in Remer. The family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Foundation in lieu of flowers.
