Nick was born in 1938 to Albert and Sophie (Livgard) Winger in Grand Rapids, MN. Nick attended school and graduated from Remer High School. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army Reserves. Nick married Kathleen Swing in Remer, MN on October 11, 1963. One son, Bradley John, was born on December 25, 1967.
Nick and Kathy lived on their farm near Remer for all of the 56 years of marriage. They raised cattle, pigs, horses, and crops on their farm. Nick was a founding member of the saddle club in Remer. He also raised and trained draft horses and saddle horses and was known by friends as "the horse whisperer." He loved trail rides, wagon and sleigh rides, and campfires. Nick served on the Slater Township board and worked for Thunder Lake Township for several years as a heavy equipment operator and bus driver and overall 'jack of all trades'. Nick was a craftsman and made many metal, wood, and leather crafts, which he gave to friends and family.
Preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathy; and son, Bradley.
Nick is survived by his bonus daughters, Tammy Cash of Crosslake, MN, Maureen Swentofske of Remer, MN; sisters, Doris (Jerry) Gilmer of Andover, MN, Ethel (Pat) O'Neal of LaVista, NE; brother, David "Butch" Winger of Remer ,MN; and three grandchildren.
