A tale of two halves cost the Northland Eagles a pair of victories
A wild first half saw both defenses unable to contain the offenses as the halftime score read Floodwood 53 Northland 44. The Eagles were moving the ball around well and using an inside/outside scoring threat to combat a well run Polar Bear offense.
The home team made some adjustments at half and quickly built their lead up to 17. The Eagles could not get stops on the defensive end and offensively the shots were not falling. The Polar Bears hit a pair of late 3-pointers to make the score a bit more lopsided as the final ended 88-66 in favor of Floodwood.
Bright spots for the Eagles were Easton Wake knocking in four 3-pointers in the game, First half offensively the boys were feeding off each other and moving the ball around as well as they have all year and it showed with frequent lay-ups.
Gary Gross led the Eagles in scoring with 20 and also led with seven rebounds and three steals. Wake led with seven assists in the game.
Scoring- Greene-2; Likens-4; Wake- 16; Nornberg-13; Gross-20; Wicks-4; Perkins-3; Kovall-4.
Eagles- 44 22 66
Floodwood 53 35 88
Once again playing back to back games the Eagles hosted Bigfork on Friday, which was the last regular season home game for the boys and possibly the last home game for Seniors, Austin Likens, Easton Wake, Zac Nornberg and Jordan Perkins.
Senior Night began with offense hard to come by. Both teams missed close shots and the Eagles were able to hold the Huskies scoreless for the games first five minutes. Unfortunately the Eagles were only able to generate five points of their own and at the 12:34 mark led 5-2.
The Eagles then went on a 13-4 run and extended their lead to 18-6 with 7:51 remaining before halftime. After a Huskie time-out, the Eagle lead would evaporate. The Eagles would only mange three points before the half and the Huskies dropped 16 to go into the half up by one at 22-21.
The Eagles would stay close for much of the beginning of the second half still only down by eight, 39-31, with 10:44 showing on the clock. The next three plus minutes proved to be the difference maker in the game as the Huskies scored 15 of the next 17 points. With the wind clearly out of their sails the Eagles managed to play the remainder of the game even as the final would have them on the short end of the 68-47 score.
Leading the way for the Eagles were: Perkins game high 11 rebounds; Wake, four assists; Nornberg, four steals and Gross with 14 points.
Scoring- Wake- 8; Nornberg-8; Gross-14; Wicks-11; Perkins-6.
Eagles- 21 26 47
Bigfork- 22 46 68
It was a tough way to close out the home schedule for the team and especially for those four Seniors, but they still have three more regular season games to play and secure a possible home playoff game. It's time to regroup, get all on the same page and drive forward toward the playoffs. This team can surprise a couple teams come tournament time. It will start with them believing in each other and their own capabilities.
Next up for the Eagles are games at LaPorte on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and at Nashwauk-Keewatin on Friday, Feb. 14.[[In-content Ad]]
