BACKUS-Cass County Elections Administrator Sharon Anderson obtained county board approval Tuesday to purchase 34 new vote tabulators and one central vote counter for $264,923.

A state grant will pay for $91,375 of the total cost. The remaining $173,548 will come from the county's capital projects fund.

Still to be purchased as a part of the county's election equipment upgrade will be assisted voting machines, which Anderson expects will cost around $110,000. The model Anderson plans to buy is not yet available in Minnesota, she said.

The county has about $14,000 remaining from its state election equipment grant to put toward the assisted voting machine purchase.

She hopes all the newly updated voting equipment will be ready for the general election later this year.

Candidates may file for state, county and soil and water conservation district offices from May 22 to June 5. They may file for city, township, school and hospital district offices from July 31 to Aug. 14.

The state primary election will be Aug. 14 and the state general election, Nov. 6.

Anyone who wants to vote in the primary election and has not voted in the last four years may pre-register by 5 p.m. July 24 for the primary or by 5 p.m. Oct. 16 for the general election. Minnesota voters may register the day of the election in the precinct where they will vote if they bring proof of residency and identity.

To register to vote online go to mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us and fill out the voter registration form or have a paper registration form mailed to you by calling 218-547-7260.

Mail ballots will be mailed to people who live in a mail ballot precinct July 12 for the primary election and Oct. 4 for the general election.

Anyone wishing to vote by absentee ballot can do so in Cass County at the courthouse in Walker or at Sylvan Town Hall, Pillager City Hall, Lake Shore City Hall, East Gull Lake City Hall, Pine River City Hall, Remer City Hall and in Cass Lake at the Leech Lake Band Government Center.
