Eagle boys go 2-1 in busy week on the hardwood

The Eagles entered the week facing two rebuilding programs in Northome/Keliher (N/K) and Hill City and one perennial powerhouse in Nevis. On Tuesday the Eagles dominated the Mustangs from N/K 100-60. They were in control the whole game and received several solid performances from their starting lineup.  Newcomer, Jeffery Meyers, subbing in for injured Liam Wake, scored 20 points and showed that he will be a key contributor for the next two years.

Alec Wake led the Eagles in scoring with 22 and added eight rebounds and six assists. Nolan Carlson had a huge night on the boards with 15 and added 15 points as well. Aiden Carlson and Nathan Johnson had 13 and 10 points respectively to round the players in double figures.

Thursday the Eagles welcomed Nevis to Northland to face the 4th ranked Tigers.  The game did not disappoint, with the Eagles hanging with Nevis all night and briefly taking the lead in the second half. In the end, the Tigers pulled away 72-62 in the hard-fought match-up.

“We had a dry spell in the second half where we missed some easy shots and turned the ball over a few times,” stated coach Chris Carlson.  “A game like this should give us confidence that we can play with anyone in the state,” he continued.

Leading the way in scoring for the Eagles was Alec Wake with 20 points and six rebounds. Nolan Carlson led the team with seven rebounds and five assists to go along with 18 points. Liam Wake, back from an ankle injury, added 10 points as well.

To close out the busy week, the Eagles made the short journey to Hill City to face the Hornets in a game that matched Hill City/Northland Storm baseball and football teammates against each other on basketball court.

“The boys look forward to playing these guys every year. It is definitely a friendly rivalry” stated coach Carlson.

The game was never close, with the Eagles jumping out early and cruising to an 84-30 victory.  Eagles’ junior sharpshooter, Alec Wake had five 3-pointers on has way to 31 points to lead Northland in scoring to go along with seven rebounds and five steals. Fellow junior Aiden Carlson stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, five rebounds, nine assists, and seven steals.  Nolan Carlson had 18 points, eight assists, and six rebounds. Nathan Johnson chipped in 12 points on strong play around the basket.

The Eagles face Northwoods on Friday at 7:15 p.m. in Remer in another tough, early season matchup in a slower week.  There are no limits on the number of fans and masks are not required.
