The Eagle boys’ basketball team entered the first game against the Menahga Braves looking to make a statement by beating a solid class AA program. They came up one point short, falling 60-59. The Eagles never found their rhythm from the outside and the athletic Braves contested the Eagles’ inside shots all night.      With under four minutes to go, Northland trailed by 11, but their furious comeback fell just short.

“We pride ourselves on shooting a high percentage and not turning the ball over. We did neither of those things and it cost us,” stated Coach Chris Carlson.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Alec Wake with 27 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Nolan Carlson added 13 points and seven rebounds while Aiden Carlson chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

Looking to get back on track, Northland headed east to Fon Du Lac for a section 7A matchup. The Eagles jumped out early and never looked back on their way to an 86-53 victory. Coming into the game, junior Alec Wake needed 13 points to surpass Keith Kunari as the leading scorer in Northland Boy’s basketball history.  He surpassed the mark early in the second half on a steal and layup. He finished with 25 on the night.

“Alec has been a key to our success over the last few years and has spent a lot of time in the gym,” stated Coach Carlson, “it is always nice to see hard work get rewarded”.

Wake’s 25 points led the way for the Eagles. He also added seven assists and seven steals. Aiden Carlson added 21 points and six assists. Nathan Johnson got on track with 17 points and Nolan Carlson was again solid with 11 points and seven rebounds to lead the Eagles on the boards.

The Eagles have a busy week ahead, hosting Northome on Tuesday and Nevis on Thursday before traveling to Hill City on Friday. There are no restrictions on fans and masks are not required.
