Buzz Lilyquist, Longville
I have a concern that our bear population has gone out of control. I have lived the better part of my 83 years in Minnesota, especially in the Longville area. This spring, summer and fall I have heard more instances of bear damage to bird feeders than ever before. The tow most effective ways to reduce the bear population is to issue more hunting permits or to initiate a spring bear hunting season. I would encourage everyone to contact their state legislators and the DNR commissioner to encourage them to initiate action to do what is necessary to reduce the bear population. One of the arguments against a spring bear season is that sows would be killed. I believe that anyone that would shoot a sow with little cubs does not belong in the woods. For those of you who are anti-hunting, please think about the family north of us who is dealing with the loss of a loved one due to a bear attack. Yes, bear attacks are rare, but they do happen.
