Cass County Board: Legislators speak to commissioners about past session success
Cass County Correspondent

WALKER -- "We were pleased with the compromised outcome," District 5B Rep. Sandy Layman, R-Cohasset, said Tuesday, Aug. 6, giving her view to the Cass County Board of this year's state legislative session.

She echoed comments District 5A Rep. John Persell, DFL-Bemidji, made earlier this summer to the county board about how, despite a politically split House and Senate, both sides saw successes this year.

Layman cited tax decreases, especially for Social Security beneficiaries. She noted $40 million was approved to expand broadband Internet service.

As an out-state legislator, she said she has been trying to educate metro area legislators about the importance of creating year-round jobs in northern Minnesota.

With her Tuesday was District 5 Sen. Justin Eichorn, R-Grand Rapids, who cited success in keeping transportation-related taxes dedicated to road and bridge uses rather than going to the general fund. He also noted improved state aid approved for counties.

Most state mandates to local governments were kept out of the 2019 bills passed, he said.

Eichorn said 95 percent of the telephone calls he gets concerning gun laws are in opposition to any changes to the state's current gun laws.

He noted new legislation to protect construction workers from harm by protesters. He also described classes now being offered on hunting and fishing to introduce children living in bigger cities to these outdoor recreation activities.

Eichorn indicated there will be a focus in the next Legislature on improving efficiencies in the massive state Department of Health and Human Services.
