Cass County Board: County joins One Watershed One Plan project

BACKUS-Cass County Board Tuesday, Feb. 19, approved joining a third One Watershed One Plan project.

This time it covers the Upper Mississippi River and also includes the counties of Beltrami, Hubbard, Itasca and Clearwater. Beltrami County and Soil and Water Conservation District will oversee this project.

In other business Tuesday, the county board:

Approved reclassifying 40.53 acres from Rural Residential 2.5 to Commercial 2 in Loon Lake Township as requested by Thomas Marcum. The planning commission approved the proposal Feb. 11. He plans to store equipment and build an office on the property.

Referred to the planning commission Leslie Leek's proposal to reclassify 40 acres of a 158-acre tract in Homebrook Township from Agricultural to Rural Residential 10.

Accepted a $2,500 grant to purchase four automatic external defibrillators for the sheriff's department.

Approved out of state travel to Iowa to enable five sheriff's deputies to attend training classes in April.

Received a report that the county sold eight of 11 tracts of timber Dec. 20 for $429,644 and all eight tracts offered for sale Jan. 31 for $257,524.75

Aspen sold for $40.75 per cord in December and $26.09 per cord in January. Slightly over 7,000 cords of aspen were sold each month.

Red oak sold for $32.55 per cord in December and $23.17 per cord in January. Slightly over 1,000 cords of oak were sold each month.

Received a report that the county earned $118,747.36 interest on investments in January 2019, up from $106,127.76 in 2018.

Approved paying the budgeted $17,500 designated to support the Initiative Foundation this year.

Approved engaging the Minnesota state auditor to conduct the annual county audit again this year.
