6/27/2020 12:47:00 PM Missing Deer River man identified
Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch reports that on Wednesday, June 17th 2020 at 11:36 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff's Office received a report of a missing adult male at the Schoolcraft State Park on the Mississippi River, located in Unorganized Township, rural Deer River MN.
Deputies arrived and learned that a male, age 41, of Deer River, MN had been recreating with friends and had walked away from the area earlier in the evening. A search of the campground and State Forest area was conducted throughout the evening hours. On June 18th additional searching was completed, including searching the Mississippi River. At approximately 2:47 p.m., a body of an adult male was recovered from the river. The man was identified as Melvin Rivera, 41, of Deer River. An autopsy is scheduled with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office. The investigation continues.
Assisting in the search was the Itasca County Sheriff's Office, Leech Lake Tribal Police Department, Minnesota DNR Conservation and the Lakes Area Dive Team.
