2/7/2020 3:00:00 PM Northland Board recognizes Lakers Lions and PFP Woodworks for donations

The Northland School Board meet Thursday, February 6 at Northland High School for the regular monthly meeting. With the last regular meeting just two weeks ago there wasn't the usual business load to discuss. All consent items were approved with a highlight of donations from PFP Woodworks in the amount of $200 and from the Lakers Lions in the amount of $100. Both donations were earmarked for the senior class trip.
Mary Yakibchuck, Principal, gave a brief update that they have been working on next year's class schedules and should have more to report at next months meeting.
Jon Payne, Assistant Principal, mentioned that it is I Love to Read month and there are various events going on during the month. One highlighted event was the Mystery Reader, where a guest comes into the school and reads to a group of elementary students.
In the Superintendent report, Pat Rendle mentioned that the World's Best Workforce (WBWF) report needs to be presented annually to the board, and then sent to the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). The plan needs to address five goals consisting of: All children being ready for school; all third-graders being able to read at grade level; all racial and economic achievement gaps between students are closed; all students being ready for career and college and all students graduating from high school. The district's plan will be presented to the board at the next work session on February 20.
Rendle also informed the board that the district is in the beginning phases of forming a Wellness Committee. There has been one meeting held, and the first task is conducting a district health assessment. Simon Whitehead with Cass County office of the University of MN Extension Service will be assisting the committee.
In other Board action:
Approved the hire of Cortney Christensen as Head Track Coach for the 2020 season and the hire of Nate Sharp as Assistant Softball Coach for the 2020 season.
Accepted the resignation of Jessica Wake as para professional, effective Feb. 7.
Approved a change in assignment for Shayne Lovering from 9-month custodian to 12-month custodian, effective Feb. 16.
Approved adding Hill City to the Track co-op between Northland and Deer River.
The board has scheduled the following meetings: a work session, Thurs., Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m.,a policy committee meeting, Thurs., Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. and the regular meeting, Thurs., Mar. 5, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. all meetings are held at Northland High School.
