This month's board meeting was held on Wednesday, June 26 at 5:30 p.m. at Northland High School and began with congratulating the Quiz Bowl team for taking First place in 8 out of 9 competitions this year, and for ranking first in the state. The consent items were all approved with the donations of one coronet and one clarinet from JR Lambert; $1000 from Tom & Barb Fisher for the Jean Barger Stowe scholarship; $441 from Northland Lions for Arts, Athletics and Academics Banquet - Student award winner meals and $300 from Christopher Woodruff for Boys Basketball all being acknowledged.
Superintendent John MacDonald gave his last report as the superintendent before heading off to retirement. MacDonald shared with the board happenings around school in preparation for the next school year. With the custodial staff cleaning, office staff preparing information for interviews and the new programs and summer staff development preparation. Also, MacDonald has been working with incoming superintendent Pat Rendle on making a smooth transition. MacDonald discussed a new On to College Program that will be offered to the Juniors and Seniors next year to help them prepare for the ACT. This program is becoming available to Northland through a partnership with the WalkerHackensack-Akeley and Hill City School Districts at no cost to the Northland District. MacDonald concluded his presentation with a thank you and appreciation for the opportunity to work for and with the district.
In other Board action:
Principal Mary Yakibchuk highlighted her written report on the various calendars that have been created for both the Elementary and High School level based on students needs. Yakibchuck also discussed the various meetings that she will be attending over the summer and the meetings that will be set up for the next school year with the staff on a daily basis.
Approved the Revenue/Expenditure Budget for SY20.
Approved the name change of Remer Elementary School to Northland Elementary School.
Accepted the resignations of the following staff: Isabelle Morrissey, Art Teacher, effective June 30; Cheryl Carlson, Speech Pathologist, effective June 10 and Bill Paul, Bus Driver, effective June 19.
Approved the hire of Angela Lewandowski as HCN Storm Girls Basketball Assistant Coach for the 2019-20 season; Cortney Christensen as Cross Country Coach for the 2019-20 season; Josey Gruba as Band Teacher for 2019-2020, effective August 23; Stacey Johnson as Head HCN Storm Girls Basketball Coach for 2019-20; Mary Overlie as Stiving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Coach for 2019-20, effective July 1, 2019; Carissa Anderson as Vocal Music/Choir Teacher for 2019-20, effective August 23; Sara Mager as 6th Grade Teacher for 2019-20, effective August 23; Mandi McNeil at the HCN Storm Junior High Girls Basketball Coach for 2019-20 and Max Torgerson as Activities Director for 2019-20.
Approved the change of assignment for Alissa Hilton-Stimson from Kitchen Helper to Cook, effective July 1.
The board has scheduled the following meetings: A policy committee on July 9 at 10 a.m. and the regular board meeting, Wednesday, July 24 at 5:30 p.m., all meetings are held at Northland High School.
