The tournament is part of an annual fundraising drive sponsored by Cass County Friends of Youth to help county youth with expenses of exhibiting at the State Fair. Scholarships awarded help pay for travel, lodging, meals, and entry fees for a large variety of exhibits, including, for example, photography, computer science, entomology, geology, carpentry, food and animals, including livestock.
Friends of Youth began the fundraising when they became aware that large numbers of youths winning competition at the Cass County Fair were unable to afford the expenses associated with the trip to St. Paul. A number of area organizations, businesses and individuals, including veterans posts, sponsored golf teams, purchased hole sponsorships and donated cash prizes and services to the tournament or directly to the scholarship fund.
The golf tournament concluded with a reception, awards and luncheon at Tianna.
Scholarship awards for this year will be announced when the number of State Fair participants is determined. Last year Friends of Youth distributed $6,843 to 26 county 4Hers to help defray their expenses for exhibiting at the fair. Golf tourney pictures may be viewed at the web site backuslegion.com
