The Northland School Board met Monday, February 11 at Northland High School, Remer, for the regular monthly meeting.
The evening began with all consent items being approved unanimously. Vice Chairperson Scarlet Bennett acknowledged donations of three bags of hats and mittens from the Women of Salem Lutheran Church of Longville; $500 from Northland Lions for the Hooked on Fishing program; $500 from Longville Area Community Foundation for Band Instruments and $500 from Northland Lions for the Senior Class Trip.
Principal Mary Yakibchuk presented her report to the board with an update of her observations in the classrooms, stating that they are a warm environment and most students are on task. A couple of things she did note that needed to be worked on is that students seem to be lacking in making conclusions to situations and there seems to be a lack of student to student interaction in group work. This will be something that the staff will address in the upcoming months. Yakibuchuk also informed the board she is planning on having three bully prevention presentations, two for students splitting them into two age groups and one for parents.
Superintendent John MacDonald updated the board on current legislative action with the calendar of deadlines for the State Congress. MacDonald also informed the board that with the recent cold temperatures, Governor Walz stated that he was leaving it to the discretion of each school district on whether to remain open or not. With that in mind he was not going to punish the schools if they fall short of the state required instructional time.
The board did decide to add back in an instructional day to account for the missed time due to the cold by changing a staff workshop day on March 29, into an instructional day. Along with accepting this change in the current school calendar the board also approved the school calendar for 2019-2020.
In other Board action:
Interviewing of the candidate for the interim school board member was tabled until the March 11 meeting due to the candidate being under the weather.
The board has scheduled the following meetings: the regular board meeting, Monday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. and the policy committee on March 12 at 10 a.m., all meetings are held at Northland High School.
