Northland Board elects officers, sets meeting dates for 2019
By Kyndra Johnson of the Press-Citizen

The Jan. 7 Northland School Board's first meeting of the year began with the swearing in of the two new board members Bill Wake and Alissa Tschida. The board then nominatied and elected Marc Ruyak as the new Board Chair. Other officer nominations were Scarlet Bennett, Vice Chair; Linda Knox, Clerk and Alissa Tschida, Treasurer.

Scarlet Bennett motioned to change the regular meeting dates to a different day of the week to accomidate for the board members schedules. It was suggested that they scheduled them for a Monday or Wednesday. With there being conflict on Wednesday nights during the winter months and conflicts on Monday nights during the summer, it was decided to scheduled meetings for the second Monday during January, February and March. The months of April through December the regular meeting dates will fall on the fourth Wednesday of the month with the exception of November and December due to holidays. Those months it will be the third Wednesday of the month. All meetings will now be held at 5:30 p.m. at Northland High School.

With discussion again on whether work sessions were necessary. It was decided that there was still a need for these but maybe only on a quarterly basis with possibly adding additional meetings if needed. The dates for these were scheduled as follows: February 4, May 8, August 14 and November 13 all to begin at 5:30 p.m. and held at Northland High School.

Committee assignments for board members were approved and are posted on the district website, Board expense reimbursements were approved with everything remaining the same and the mileage rates to coincide with federal rates. Also, the board designated the Pine Cone Press-Citizen as the district's official newspaper.

There was also some discussion held to fill a vacancy on the board due to an elected member declining the position after the last election. John McDonald presented 3 options to the board to fill this position. It was decided to post the position for applicants with a close date of January 24. The candidates will then be invited to the February 11 regular board meeting to be asked questions in an interview process. The board will then appoint one of the candidates at the April 24 regular meeting to hold office until a special election can be held on November 5, 2019.

The board's next regular meeting will be Monday, Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Northland High School in Remer.
