11/16/2018 2:09:00 PM Northland School Board Discuss Administration Structure
By Kyndra Johnson of the Press-Citizen
The Northland School Board met Thursday, November 15 at Northland High School, Remer, for the regular monthly meeting. During this meeting the board approved a Cyber Security Insurance Policy with NAS Insurance in the amount of $1,642.68. Superintendent John MacDonald and Technology Coordinator Lori Sizenbach both stated that this insurance would be beneficial to the district if there was ever to be a cyber-attack on the school district. Sizenbach shared that there have been other neighboring schools that have received ransomware and luckily they had this insurance to cover the cost of a new server so they didn't have to pay the ransom to get their information back. Although this won't protect the district from ever getting hit by a cyber-attack, it will provide them with a means to get new servers and software.
MacDonald also gave the board a recommendation for the future administration structure of the school. With MacDonald's retirement coming up at the end of the school year, he discussed two options for his position. The first being a superintendent/principal position. MacDonald didn't feel that this type of position would work in the Northland district. The second option would be to share a superintendent with another school district. MacDonald felt that this would be the best option for the district. The district already shares a business manager with Hill City, so it would be a viable option to share a superintendent with them also because the two positions work closely together. He also recommended that the board restructure the Principal and Assistant Principal positions to make them a High School Principal and Elementary Principal position.
There was much discussion on whether the district was in a stable enough position to only have a part-time superintendent or if there needed to be somebody there full-time. It was decided and motioned that a letter be drafted and sent to Hill City to see if there was interest from their board to discuss the sharing of a superintendent.
