4/14/2018 10:00:00 AM The Experimental City: What was it?
In the early 1970s, 50,000 acres of Aitkin County was chosen for the "Minnesota Experimental City" or MXC. This "dream city" was designed in hopes of having a self-contained entity and a living laboratory for urban planning ideas, environment and technology.
Those directly affected by MXC were residents of Aitkin County and parts of Itasca and Cass Counties, specifically the communities of Hill City, Swatara and their surrounding townships. Community members banded together to form a "Save Our Northland" committee geared towards preserving natural wildlife where MXC was proposed.
Learn for the first time or revisit MXC by attending a screening of "The Experimental City" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21 at the Reif Center in Grand Rapids.
In addition to the documentary, artifacts from its plans will be displayed. Viewing fees are $5 preorder or $7 at the door. To preorder, visit ReifCenter.org, First National Bank in Remer, Woodland Bank in Hill City, or call Carol O'Brien at (218)566-4819.
Proceeds from this event go to support the construction of the Inspire Me Playground in Remer.
