The turtles are the star attraction at Longville's turtle races.
Longville's international appeal continued August 7 as turtle racers from Germany, Africa and Canada competed on the downtown racing circle. Perfect summer weather added to the enjoyment of families and friends as they enjoyed the available games, contests and food.
After 440 racers, the Grand Winner was Joran Foss, age 6, of Aberdeen, South Dakota, and the Grand Slowpoke was Hailey Becker, age 7, from Blue Earth, Minnesota. In the Chamber Resort Race, Hallie Bohlman, age 3, of Thompson, North Dakota, bested 10 other racers. She represented Thunder Lake Lodge.
The Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce would like to recognize the volunteers who make this event possible. Race judges were Pat Boen of RE/MAX Lakes Area Realty and Cathy Stagnaro.
Dodee Colberg and Rose Franta registered racers, while Jan Thielen of Thielen's Rainbow Bay Resort and Sue Meyer sold tickets and souvenirs. Sharon Gilsrud and Rosalie Letson, assisted by Noah Martin, managed the prize table.
Game operators included Mike and Kathy Froehlig and their grandchildren, Gabrielle and Chase Froehlig, Mary Ann Straley, Elsie Hagen, Lucinda Kline and grandson Parker, Chuck Colberg, Mary Jo Shurtleff, Dennis Zuelke of Salem Lutheran Church, Jim Garner of Birdies Mini-Golf and Water Wars, Kathy Sweeney of Woodland Insurance and volunteers from Luther Dell Bible Camp.
Nancy Loren of Little Boy Resort registered racers for the Chamber Resort Race. Katie Daudt made and sold fresh popcorn, donating a portion of the proceeds to World Vision.
Setup and tear down were handled by Jake Woodworth and his team from Camp Olson YMCA, along with Don Shurtleff, Dennis Zaske, Tom Hasser, Tom Carpenter and Tom Kutschied of VFW Post 772. Street manager was Stan Johnson.
Jake Spartz was the official turtle race announcer, assisted by Tom Lund of VFW Post 772.
Turtle races will be held Wednesdays through Aug. 21 in downtown Longville. Race registration and the contests and games open at 1 p.m. The Chamber Resort Race is held at 2 p.m., followed by the regular turtle races. Painted turtles can be rented for $3 or you can bring your own.
