The first Northland School Board meeting of the year was held on Monday, January 3 at 5:30 p.m. and began with the nominations for officers. The board nominated and re-elected Marc Ruyak as the Board Chair,  Bill Wake, Vice Chair; Linda Knox, Clerk and Tyler Seifert, Treasurer.

The next item on the agenda was to set the regular meeting dates and times. There was some discussion on possibly changing them from Thursday nights to Wednesday nights, but decided to remain with the traditional Thursday night due to Wednesdays being a church night and people possibly having other commitments. Therefore, the board chose to continue holding the meetings the third Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. with the exception of the October meeting which will be held Thursday, October 27 at 5:30 p.m. The board also scheduled four work sessions for the year, which will be held on the first Thursday of February, May, August and November at 5:30 p.m. All meetings will be held at Northland High School.

Ruyak proposed keeping all committee assignments for board members the same as last year. A few changes were made but most committee assignments remained the same and are posted on the district website, www.isd118.k12.mn.us. Board expense reimbursements were approved with everything remaining the same and the mileage rates to coincide with federal rates. Also, the board designated the Pine Cone Press-Citizen as the district’s official newspaper.

Ruyak brought up for brief discussion the new guidelines that the CDC has set forth for quarantining when testing positive for Covid. It was mentioned that CDC has reduced the period from seven days to five days and recommended that administration follow those guidelines moving forward.

   In other business, the board:

   • Approved the dissolution of an agreement with Education in Partners.

   • Accepted the resignation of Debra Schaefer as secretary, effective Jan. 14.

The board’s next regular meeting will be Thursday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Northland High School in Remer.
