Turtle Races burn into new season
Longville's summer tradition continues

With another school year in the books, it is time to take to the streets of Longville every Wednesday for the time honored tradition of turtle racing. The racing has been an annual enjoyment for the young and young-at-heart since 1967.

Longville's Main Street closes down at 12:30 p.m., in order for volunteers to set up the registration booth, games, prize table, and to position the turtle race command post, "Turtle Mobile," in the center of town. Food and beverages are available at area restaurants and by chamber member vendors on Main Street.

Registration and contests begin at 1 p.m. Contests are free, with lots of prizes. Participants can test their skills in the hula hoop contest; Macarena dance, YMCA dance and the singing the lyrics to the Chicken Dance. Game tickets are .50 cents each. Some of the games include: fishing for fun; bola toss, ring toss, football toss, and shooting hoops basketball. There is a game for children of all ages, and everyone who plays wins a prize. It's still just $3 to race a turtle, either in the special resort turtle race or the regular turtle races. Turtle racing action takes place from 2 until 3:30 p.m. The resort turtle race for Chamber member lodging properties is the first race of the day. One racer per lodging property; need the special resort race ticket, available from the lodging properties, to register.

Winners and slow pokes from each heat will race again in the last two races of the day. The grand winner and grand slowpoke will receive special prizes and will have their pictures published in the Pine Cone Press-Citizen and on the web pineconepresscitizen.com; and Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce's Facebook page.

For more information about the Turtle Races, visit www.longville.com. If you would like to volunteer, call Dave or Pat Adams at 218-363-6810.
