9/8/2017 4:33:00 PM Grand Rapids Area Male Chorus to Perform Sunday
Organized over 60 years ago, the Grand Rapids Area Male Chorus will perform in concert at Salem Lutheran Church in Longville on Sunday, September 17. The two-hour concert is at 5 p.m. The concert is free; donations are appreciated.
The 33 members of the choral group, ages 15 to 83, sing a wide variety of music including show tunes, folk songs, classical, spirituals, sacred and humorous selections. Some of the members have been singing with the chorus for over 50 years. Under the direction of Eileen Grosland, the chorus was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and was a 2016 recipient of the Blandin Foundation Legacy and Leadership Award.
The chorus schedules three major events in Grand Rapids every year and performs throughout northern Minnesota at numerous fundraisers, community events and church services and other venues. Men of all ages and singing levels are invited to join -- no auditions. The mission of the chorus is to perform choral music for the enjoyment and benefit of the members and their audiences and to encourage a lifetime of singing among men of all ages and backgrounds.
Grosland has been the director for seven years after retirement from 32 years in public education. She has taught vocal and instrumental music at all levels, kindergarten through college. She currently teaches private piano and voice lessons, directs a local church choir, and is active in the arts community
Accompanist, Bonnie Kangas is a much sought after accompanist and over the years has played for up to five different school districts and many area churches. She currently accompanies the Greenway School District choirs and bands.
This is the last concert of the Music in the Park series for the summer season, a community outreach activity of Salem Lutheran Church located at 1340 County Road 5. The concert series is supported by the Longville Area Community Choir. It is funded in part with grants from the Blandin Foundation, Carl and Vera Schmidt Foundation, Arvig, Sherman A. Yocum VFW Post 772, Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, Lake Country Power, Rusty's Up North Realty, and the Longville Area Community Foundation.
